The wave of market structure changes that hit the US markets in the last two years was virtually unprecedented. With Reg NMS and other changes largely behind us, has the structure of US markets finally settled down or can we expect another wave of change? Have we arrived at the post-duopoly world? How many market centers and dark pools do we really need? Do we have enough, too many, or can we expect more? What changes do we anticipate hitting in 2009? Are we heading toward more consolidation, more fragmentation, or are the new themes going to revolve around multi-asset class trading, trans-atlantic/global platforms, or something else? These questions plus more will be addressed in this panel.

Changes in the structure of the brokerage business as well as our overall US markets have led to decreasing liquidity information available to investors. Are the traditional sources – traders, sales traders, specialists, and market makers – still at the center of the order flow? Can technology be used to supplant or increase the knowledge of where liquidity resides? This panel will tap the knowledge of several recognized experts in the field of electronic trading to provide the answers. |

Liquidity can be defined in many ways but, for purposes of this discussion, it refers to an asset's ability to be easily converted through an act of buying or selling without causing a significant movement in the price and with minimum loss of value. That said, an unspoken component of that definition is the ability of your counterparty to stand up to the other side of your trade. How is the industry dealing with the increasing pressures on credit lines? Should market utilities determine best practices? Do we have metrics that can objectively evaluate how we are improving or falling behind? How do we mitigate counterparty risk in this new world?

Because of increased volatility in both price and credit characteristics of securities, firms want to improve visibility into their overall market and liquidity risk positions. In this session we will explore how risk management systems are moving closer to transaction origination. The goal is to accelerate the risk metric calculations from periodic "look-back" methods to real-time reporting, and even pre-trade modeling. Innovative approaches and ground-breaking solutions for this critical arena will be discussed. |
